Tottenham insider issues 'incredible' Kavanagh claim after being let down at Everton

Tottenham insider John Wenham was left fuming by Chris Kavanagh’s performance on Sunday.

Wenham, who regularly breaks news about the club on his Lilywhite Rose social media channels was left baffled by the referees’ decisions.

Tottenham drew 0-0 with Everton on Sunday but without VAR, the result could have been very different.

Kavanagh gave Everton a penalty after Hugo Lloris brought down Richarlison inside the area.

However, he was told to check the VAR monitor and changed his mind after replays showed Lloris got to the ball first.

Kavanagh then had to correct himself when Mason Holgate scythed down Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg and was initially awarded a yellow card.

After another VAR intervention, the yellow was upgraded to a red in what Wenham described as one of several “incredibly disappointing” decisions.

“I thought the referee was incredibly disappointing,” Wenham told Football Insider correspondent Ben Wild.

“The fact he initially awarded the penalty and had to be told to have a look by Jon Moss was so poor.

“At least he changed his mind. That could have been damning for us. It would have been a really unnecessary penalty when Lloris clearly got to the ball.

“That could have cost us and given the whole club a really negative vibe going into the international break.

“He also ignored the red card when it was clearly a red card offence and an aggressive one at that.

“Obviously I’m thankful for VAR being alert to both situations.

“The red card happened so late in the game it couldn’t have really done anything for us.

“I’m just really glad the referee didn’t cost us because I don’t think we deserved to lose.”
