Tottenham are one of a number of top clubs keeping tabs on Caen wonderkid Elye Wahi, according to a report.
French newspaper Le Parisien claims on their website that Liverpool, Southampton, Manchester City, Manchester United, Juventus and Torino have all made their minds up about pursuing the 14-year-old even though they cannot sign him before his 16th birthday.
It is understood that the “gifted” striker’s incredible goal scoring with the Caen Under-14 and Under-15 sides last season has “whetted the appetite” of the European elite after he found the net a staggering 89 times.
Wahi’s rise in France has been compared to that of Chelsea midfielder N’Golo Kante, who like the teenager began making a name for himself at Ligue 1 side Caen after beginning his youth career with JS Suresnes.
A scout of one of the teams interested in Wahi has also drawn similarities between him and Liverpool star Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain.
“Elye is a very interesting player,” said a Premier League club’s recruitment expert, as quoted by Le Parisien.
“He is a powerful, technical, fast and agile striker. He has a sense of purpose even if I find him a little too individualistic.
“He is a player with great potential, it reminds me of Alexander Oxlade-Chamberlain.”
Football Insider Verdict
It will be interesting to see what happens to Wahi in his career. It’s no surprise that so many clubs are in the hunt for his signature at such an early stage due to his goal scoring exploits last season. Any striker who can score 89 goals, at any level, in a season is surely worth keeping an eye on. Tottenham will face some tough competition if they want to sign him though, especially from Juventus and the two Manchester clubs. However if Mauricio Pochettino is still in North London when Wahi is able to be signed, the Argentine’s use of young players in his first-team could persuade the wonderkid to come to the English capital.
