Tottenham have tabled a last-gasp bid for Leicester forward Demarai Gray, according to a report.
The Mirror claims that Spurs have launched a stunning “straight cash” bid for Gray, 21, and in doing so have jumped to the front of the queue in the race to sign him.
It is understood that the England Under-21 international wants to either get a first-team spot at Leicester or be sold and Bournemouth have so far offered nearly £30million, which means that if Spurs have emerged in pole position for his signature, they may have offered more.
The report adds that Gray is frustrated that Leicester have rebuffed numerous bids for him this summer and that he is only earning £25,000-a-week – a fraction of what the Foxes’ stars are currently picking up.
Tottenham are yet to strengthen their attacking options this summer with Mauricio Pochettino only signing Paulo Gazzaniga and Davinson Sanchez with just over 24 hours to go before the transfer window slams shut.
However a swoop for Premier League ace Gray would no doubt be an exciting proposition for Spurs as the wide-forward is known for his explosive pace and ability to pull off the unpredictable.
He made 43 appearances across all competitions last term for Leicester, scoring three goals and supplying six assists in the process, although most of his game time came off the bench.
Gray isn’t the only attacking player that Spurs are linked with a late summer swoop for as Belgian news outlet HLN reported earlier in the month the club are readying a swoop for Liverpool’s Divock Origi.
Football Insider Verdict
Tottenham are a team that have come in for a lot of credit in recent seasons, but this summer they have been blasted for their lack of signings. They have been one of the late bloomers in the transfer window and this deal would no doubt excite the fans. Gray is a future England international and he just isn’t getting the chances he deserves at Leicester. Under the guidance of Pochettino and playing alongside the likes of Harry Kane and Dele Alli, he could become one of the best England wingers in the Premier League. Tottenham have to get this deal done, it would be one major statement to make to their rivals.
In other Tottenham news, Spurs still have a chance of signing the next Gareth Bale this summer.
