Tottenham are looking to secure Everton’s Ross Barkley in a £20million move in January, according to a report.
The Daily Telegraph claim on their website that Spurs are set to go head-to-head with Chelsea for the 23-year-old, after he reportedly turned down the Blues in a £35million move in the summer.
Barkley, who would have just six months remaining on his contract at Goodison Park, has been primarily utilised as an attacking midfielder throughout his career, although the Telegraph claim that may change should he move to north London.
The newspaper report that Spurs boss Mauricio Pochettino would look to make a key change to his role and drop the Everton man deeper alongside Eric Dier, acting as a potential replacement for Mousa Dembele who is struggling with injury.
Barkley is yet to make an appearance this season as he recovers from a hamstring injury of his own, but that has not put Spurs off hunting his signature.
He has made 179 appearances for Everton throughout his career, scoring 27 times and setting up his team mates with another 28 assists.
He also has 22 appearances for England, and the Daily Telegraph claim a change of role could put him back in contention for the Three Lions’ World Cup squad.
Football Insider verdict
Tottenham look have saved a bit of money having failed to snap Barkley up in the summer, with £20million looking a reasonable piece of business. They still have to fend of Chelsea but Pochettino’s plans for Barkley may just give them the edge. Dropping him deeper would give him more opportunity of game time, while at the same time knowing he could fit into a more advanced role if the need arose. With a World Cup around the corner he does not have much time to force his way into Gareth Southgate’s plans and playing regular football where he can impress is the only way that is going to happen. There is an awful lot of competition at Spurs, with the likes of Moussa Sissoko and Victor Wanyama fighting for position, but the same can be said at Chelsea. Either way, it appears he will be on his way, and fans will have to sit tight to discover where he ends up.
