Tottenham have made an approach to sign Victor Wanyama from Southampton this summer, Football Insider sources understand.

The midfield anchorman was pursued by Tottenham last summer and the Londoners are targeting him again in the forthcoming window.

A Spurs source has told Football Insider that the club have made initial contact with Wanyama’s representatives in recent days.

He has been identified as a key target by manager Mauricio Pochettino and his staff as they prepare to reinforce the midfield this summer.

Tottenham are long-time suitors of Wanyama, who put in a transfer request last year in order to secure a move to White Hart Lane.

Wanyama has been offered a lucrative new five-year contract by Southampton but he has refused to put pen to paper.

Unless the 24-year-old’s stance changes, Southampton will almost certainly have to listen to offers for the Kenyan rather than risk losing him on a free transfer next year. The source said the Saints value the Kenyan at around £20million.

The defensive midfielder has been a mainstay of the Southampton team since joining from Celtic in a £12.5million deal in 2013.

Wanyama has had an excellent season for Koeman’s side, making 35 appearances for the team that finished sixth in the Premier League.

He is well know to Pochettino, who coached him for a season before his own move to White Hart Lane in the summer of 2014.

However, Spurs’ pursuit of Wanyama faces the problem of poor relations between the north Londoners and their counterparts on the south coast.

This stems from Tottenham signing Toby Alderweireld from Atletico Madrid last summer when Southampton believed they already had a deal in place to sign the Belgium international.
