Tottenham are among a number of clubs to have made contact with Championship club Wolves for attacker Helder Costa, according to a report.
Former senior Sky Sports reporter Graeme Bailey has wrote for the Gambling Times that up to half-a-dozen clubs have contacted the Midlands giants for the 23-year-old, including Spurs, Everton, West Brom and West Ham.
However, the report details that top-flight rivals Southampton are leading the chase and are ready to match Wolves’ £25million valuation for their star player.
Bailey also goes on to quote a source as saying: “Southampton feel they are just about there with him – he has been sensational for Wolves and they want it doing sooner rather than later.”
Costa has picked up interest in England after completing a loan move to Wolves from Benfica in the summer before signing permanently for the club in January in a huge £13million deal, agreeing a four-year contract.
He has managed to bring a return of 10 goals and eight assists in 35 Championship appearances for the struggling Midlands side from the right-wing.
Now, Tottenham are currently playing with wing-backs instead of wingers, but Mauricio Pochettino could have identified Costa as a target if he plans to switch back to a 4-2-3-1 formation in the future.
Football Insider verdict:
Anything above £10million for Costa would be over-paying and Tottenham should steer clear of this one if Wolves’ reported £25million valuation is correct. It cannot be denied that the pacey attacker is a talented player and has managed to showcase his talents in a poor team in his debut season in England. However, the Premier League is a completely different level to England’s second tier and a player should not be worth more than £10million with just one Championship season under their belt. Additionally, Costa has yet to even be capped by national side Portugal and Tottenham should be looking for established international’s if they want to continue their progression. This Costa link feels very much like last summer’s Georges-Kevin N’Koudou signing, which has so far proven unsuccessful.
In other Tottenham transfer news, this key player will decide in weeks whether he will quit the club.
