Paul Robinson has tipped Tottenham to “cut their losses” and allow Gedson Fernandes to return to Benfica in the new year.
Speaking exclusively to Football Insider correspondent Dylan Childs, the former Lilywhites number one heaped praise on Jose Mourinho who is “not afraid” to make big decisions.
Mourinho told SportTV last week that he would allow Fernandes to end his loan spell at Tottenham early if it could be agreed with his parent club Benfica.
Fernandes only has 63 minutes of first team football to his name this season and has only made the Premier League matchday squad on one occasion.
Robinson drew comparisons between the Portugal international’s situation and that of Dele Alli.
“Fernandes is a player I like,” he told Football Insider.
“I think he he immense quality but there is only so much room in this squad.
“Jose has been brought in for a reason. As a manager of that level you have to make big decisions. Sometimes you make decisions on big players, even if you signed them yourself.
“If Fernandes does not fit into the system then you have to look at it and say, ‘I made a bad call. There is no point in you sitting here not playing, it is best that we all cut our losses.’
“Top managers are paid to make top decisions and we have already seen it with Dele Alli.
“He is not at the level Jose wants him to be at and he is not afraid to leave him out. Jose is not afraid of big decisions and it is the same as Fernandes.
“Spurs are onto something really special this year.”
