While Tottenham and Liverpool have been battling out for a spot in the top four this season, their rivalry looks set to continue across summer.
Spurs have grown into one of England’s top sides after years of being on the fringes of European qualification, and the Reds have reestablished themselves among the English elite after a period of watching on from the sidelines.
With the transfer window quickly approaching it would come as no surprise if the pair were scouting the same talents, with the two sides both likely looking to strengthen in similar areas – primarily at the back, for their attacks are two of the most exciting not only domestically but on the European stage.
However their backlines have both been lacking the desired quality at times, and that includes in between the sticks, with Hugo Lloris, Michel Vorm, Loris Karius and Simon Mignolet all making mistakes for their respective sides.
To solve the issue, the Sun report that Liverpool are plotting to make a shock move for ex-Reds star Pepe Reina this summer, to act as number two to Karius.
However, with such an experienced talent available on a free transfer – the 35-year-old’s contract at Napoli expiring this summer – Spurs must be looking to swoop in and break hearts at Anfield, where Reina made 395 appearances and established himself as a cult icon.
With Vorm also set to leave on a free at the end of the season, it leaves Mauricio Pochettino with a gap in his squad, and although Paulo Gazzaniga performed admirably in his one appearance for Spurs, more experience is necessary to have the desired impact in cups and in Europe.
At Spurs, Reina would be almost guaranteed game time in the domestic cups and even possibly the Champions League (if Spurs finish in the top four), and it seems a no-brainer of a deal for Pochettino to pull off.
In other Tottenham news, the club have been placed among Europe’s elite with a stunning £42.1million transfer claim.
