Tottenham planning to sell Tanguy Ndombele after 'surprise' development - pundit

Tottenham are well placed to complete the £30million transfer of Tanguy Ndombele after a “surprising” start to his Napoli career.

That is according to ex-Leeds United and Coventry City striker Noel Whelan, speaking to Football Insider about the maverick midfielder’s future.

Tottenham confirmed on 19 August that Ndombele, 25, had joined Napoli on loan for the 2022-23 season.

It is believed, a Spurs source has told this site, that there is a £30m buy option in the deal that is triggered if Napoli secure Champions League qualification.

The Serie A club are well placed to do so after an excellent start to the season.

They are top of the league, five points clear of second-placed Atalanta, and are almost certain to top a Champions League group that includes last season’s finalists Liverpool on the back of five straight wins.

Ndombele has now made 14 appearances for Napoli in all competitions, accumulating 534 minutes of action in total.

Whelan expects a permanent exit for the midfielder to now happen.

“Given Napoli are doing amazingly well, it’s been a surprise that Ndombele has played so much,” Whelan told Football Insider.

“He’s obviously impressed the manager and coaching staff there, and that can only be a good thing for Tottenham.

“They want him gone for good, Antonio Conte doesn’t want him around the place and his game clearly isn’t suited to the Premier League.

“If you can get his huge wages off the wage bill, and invest in players the manager wants, that would be perfect for Tottenham.

“I expect him to get a permanent move if he remains a key player for Napoli”.

Ndombele was a bit-part player for Tottenham during the 2021-22 campaign after failing to live up to expectations.

He played just seven times under Antonio Conte before being shipped out on loan to Lyon last January.
