Sources: Tottenham race Crystal Palace to sign Dan Neil

Tottenham are plotting a surprise move for Sunderland star Dan Neil, Football Insider understands.

The Londoners have been alerted to the change in circumstances of the North East Football Writers’ Association’s young player of the year 2021.

A recruitment source has told Football Insider that Tottenham are keeping tabs on Neil, 20, ahead of the summer window.

There is also interest in the England Under-20 midfielder from top-flight rivals Crystal Palace and Brighton.

There is increasing concern on Wearside that Neil will leave the Stadium of Light in the summer.

He has been left out of the Sunderland team recently by manager Alex Neil after being an integral member of the starting XI up until February.

So impressive was the rising star in the first half of the season that he was an EFL young player of the year nominee and won the North East Football Writers’ Association’s young player of the year 2021.

He became only the fourth academy player from the club to win the 13-year-old award, following Jack Colback and England keeper Jordan Pickford, who won it twice.

Neil was a key member of Sunderland’s Wembley-winning Football League Trophy team and established himself in the Sunderland first team under ex-boss Lee Johnson.

He signed a new contract at the end of last year that runs until the summer of 2025.

But he has not been as influential under Alex Neil, who has responded by regularly dropping his namesake to the bench.
