Tottenham are set to make a bid for Swansea defender Alfie Mawson, according to a report.
The Sun claim that Spurs are eyeing a £15million move for the 23-year-old this summer and that manager Mauricio Pochettino has been in contract with the Premier League club about a potential deal.
It is understood that the north London club view the England Under-21 international as a squad player for next season and someone that could nail down a starting XI position in the future.
The report details that Pochettino wants a ball playing centre-back for next season and Mawson is seen as someone who could even replace Toby Alderweireld if he is sold.
Mawson is currently on duty with England at the Under-21s European Championships and completed 90 minutes in the opening group game 0-0 draw against Sweden.
The centre-back is being eyed up as a potential Spurs player for next season and has just one year of top-flight experience under his belt.
He completed a move to the Liberty Stadium and helped Swansea retain their Premier League status.
Mawson made 27 appearances last season for the Swans and chipped in with four goals in return.
Football Insider verdict:
Mawson proved his qualities last year with Swansea during his first season in the Premier League and is only going to improve. The 23-year-old centre-back made a couple of carless mistakes at the beginning of his Swans career, but is fast developing into an accomplished defender. He is playing an important role for England’s Under-21s side and there is a real belief that he can become a top-class defender. Mawson cost £5million when he moved to the Liberty Stadium and he has not done enough to warrant a £15million price tag. Spurs would certainly be taking a risk if they splashed out on the Englishman and he is not yet at a stage to replace Alderweireld. However, Mawson does fit the Pochettino mould and Spurs could be prepared to invest in the future.
