Tottenham are in advanced talks to sign Espanyol goalkeeper Pau Lopez this summer with an announcement close, according to a report.

Spanish newspaper SPORT claim that the two clubs have re-opened negotiations over the potential transfer of the player to the Premier League side, after initial discussions broke down last month.

The 22-year-old stopper had spent the duration of the 2016-17 season on loan at Tottenham, but despite failing to make a single appearance for the club, Spurs had been keen to extend his stay in north London.

However, Tottenham could not strike a reasonable agreement with the La Liga outfit, and saw their option to purchase the player at the end of his loan spell expire on Saturday.

But manager Mauricio Pochettino has fresh hope of landing the Spanish youngster, having moved to re-open negotiations.

Tottenham have tabled a fresh offer worth £2.2million plus objective-based add-ons for the player, and it is said that an agreement could be confirmed shortly.

Lopez would become the club’s first signing of the summer if an agreement can finally be reached, although he may struggle to improve upon his backup role at the club behind senior duo Hugo Lloris and Michel Vorm.

He is widely regarded as a rising star of Spanish football and had been a regular first-team player at Espanyol, keeping 10 clean sheets from 48 appearances in all competitions, but may be willing to sacrifice his key role for an extended stay at Tottenham.

Tottenham have refused to lie down in their pursuit of Lopez, and it appears as though their hard work and resilience, could finally be rewarded. Lopez is certainly one for the future, and could prove a valuable asset to the club over the coming seasons. The player has already spoken fondly of the effect of working under Pochettino and his coaching staff at Tottenham last season, and it could be an ideal place for him to continue his development; even though he is likely to be starved of regular first-team opportunities.
