Tottenham set to benefit from 'huge' Eric Dier development - Robinson

Paul Robinson has claimed Tottenham stand to benefit from Eric Dier’s “hugely deserved” call up to the England squad.

Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, the former White Hart Lane number one suggested Dier’s confidence will grow after Gareth Southgate recalled him for the Three Lions.

On Thursday (15 September), Dier, 28, was announced in England’s squad for upcoming Nations League games against Italy and Germany.

The centre-half has been excluded from Gareth Southgate’s most recent squads and was not picked for Euro 2020.

Dier scored for Spurs on Saturday in a 6-2 win over Leicester City.

When asked by Football Insider‘s Dylan Childs for his reaction to the call up, Robinson said: “It is hugely deserved.

“I, along with a lot of people, doubted him 18 months ago. I questioned his performances. There was even question marks over his future at Tottenham.

“But, under [Antonio] Conte he has been absolutely phenomenal. He has been the best player in a Tottenham shirt. [Harry] Kane and Son [Heung-min] get all of the plaudits as you’d expect but Dier has improved so much. He has been outstanding.

“You can see his leadership qualities as well. For me, Dier and Son have been the best two players over the last 18 months.

“Since Conte has come in he has been transformed. Playing in a back three has really benefitted him.

“It is great that he is back in the squad because he gives Gareth Southgate another option. He allows him to play a back three.

“This will be good for his confidence as well, which can only be a good thing for him and Spurs.”
