Tottenham could be in trouble after 'very worrying' Kane development - pundit

Tottenham look bereft of ideas when Harry Kane is not on song – and that is “very worrying” for their prospects this season.

So says ex-Premier League forward Noel Whelan, speaking exclusively to Football Insider about Kane’s showing against Crystal Palace last Saturday.

As per Opta on 11 September, the England skipper failed to register a shot or a touch inside the opposition penalty area for the first time in his Premier League career.

Spurs were ultimately thumped 3-0 after Japhet Tanganga’s red card reduced the visitors to 10 men.

And Whelan insists that Kane’s horror stat was a symptom of a sterile performance all-around from Tottenham.

He told Football Insider correspondent Adam Williams: “It was a flat performance from Tottenham, to be quite frank.

“The ball was always going sideways and backwards. No one wanted to take that chance and switch the play.

“It looked very laboured, to say the least. Kane could not get himself into the game, there was no support for him.

“You need players around you when you play with your back to goal. There wasn’t enough of that.

“When Kane isn’t firing, they look flat and void of ideas at times. That’s very worrying for them.

That defeat at Selhurst Park was Spurs’ first in the league under new manager Nuno Espirito Santo.

They are next in action tomorrow (16 September) against Stade Rennais in the Europa Conference League group stage.
