Tottenham to table defender offer - report

By Harry Sykes

Tottenham will table a contract offer to star defender Toby Alderweireld in a bid to tie him down to the club, according to a report.

The Telegraph claim the high flying Londoners are ready to offer a contract extension to the key centre-back, whose current deal expires in the summer of 2019.

It is said in the newspaper’s list of the top 100 January transfer targets that Atletico Madrid could be one possible destination for the Belgium international, who was signed from the Spanish club 18 months ago.

Alderweireld is firmly established as one of the central players of a Spurs team that has been transformed by Mauricio Pochettino in the last two seasons.

He has developed a formidable centre-back partnership with fellow Belgian Jan Vertonghen and is widely regarded as one of the Premier League’s best defenders.

Alderweireld missed two months of this season with a knee injury but has been back to his best since being restored to the team and was outstanding in the 2-0 midweek win over Chelsea.

Tottenham have been busy tying their senior players to new contracts in recent months, with the likes of Harry Kane, Dele Alli, Christian Eriksen, Eric Dier, Kyle Walker, Vertonghen, Hugo Lloris and Danny Rose all agreeing long-term contracts.

Football Insider verdict:

Alderweireld is not only the outstanding defender in the Premier League but he there is a growing consensus among Tottenham fans that he is the best to have played for the club in the last 30 years. Strong in the air, mobile, technically excellent and a superb reader of the game, it is almost impossible to identify a weakness in his game. He doesn’t have off days and makes amazingly few errors. Spurs are not renowned for paying over the odds for any player, but the brilliant Belgian is one they cannot afford to lose. He is worth his weight in gold.

In other Tottenham transfer news, Spurs have agreed a striker transfer and the player has been hailed as “brilliant” by his manager.
