Tottenham tipped to complete 1 January transfer after 'devastating' news - pundit

Tottenham will be forced into the transfer market in January after an update on the fitness of Cristian Romero.

That’s according to former Leeds stopper Paddy Kenny, speaking exclusively to Football Insider after a “devastating” update from Antonio Conte.

On Wednesday (1 December) journalist Jonathan Veal quoted Conte as saying Romero, 23, may not play again until February.

The defender suffered a hamstring injury in Argentina’s World Cup qualifier against Brazil on 16 November.

However, Spurs had been unable to confirm the severity of the injury until 1 December as they continued to investigate how bad the knock was.

“Spurs have struggled at the back in any case,” Kenny told Football Insider correspondent Ben Wild.

“I’m sure Conte will have money to spend in January. I think there was probably an idea to get a new defender in anyway.

“Now you have a player who won’t play again until February, that’s devastating.

“Even then, they might not be playing at their best until the last weeks of the season.

“The second half of the season is so important for Tottenham, they need to build.

“You need a fully fit squad to do that so I think they will be looking to sign a new centre-back.

“With this injury, they need someone in soon. So I can see them sorting it out before January.

“Then the new signing – and it could be a big one – can be there straight away on 1 January.”

Romero has made 13 appearances for Tottenham since joining the club from Atalanta.

His loan move will be made permanent next summer with Spurs facing an obligation to buy.
