Kieran Maguire: Tottenham could rake it in from 'horrendous' plan fans will hate
The idea of watching a match in the metaverse may sound “horrendous” to the everyday fan – but Tottenham can use the new technology to mushroom their matchday income.
That is the view of finance guru Kieran Maguire, speaking exclusively to Football Insider about Spurs’ first steps into the virtual matchday experience.
As relayed by Sports Pro last Thursday (9 June), the Londoners are the first Premier League club to use Ticketmaster’s 3D virtual venue technology to show fans their view before they purchase tickets.
Spurs’ head of ticketing Ian Murphy claimed that the software provides the “opportunity to visually showcase the state of the art premium facilities”.
The likes of Man City have gone one step further and are working towards offering fans the chance to watch matches in a virtual replica of their stadium in the Metaverse.
And Maguire argues that this is the next logical step for Spurs.

“I think Spurs are in an enviable position,” he told Football Insider.
“They will sell out practically every time. But because Spurs are one of the most expensive clubs in the Premier League, they want to justify the prices by exhibiting what is beneficial for individuals when they attend matches.
“This could be a precursor to the Metaverse, which a lot of clubs are keen to exploit. If you can sell virtual tickets to a match, you can watch a match from anywhere in the world as long as you have got a device.
“For me, that sounds absolutely horrendous. But there will be people who can’t get to the match and this is a compromise.”
