Tottenham are willing to pay a mammoth £102million to seal the signing of Tanguy Ndombele from Lyon this summer, Football Insider can reveal.
The Londoners are ready to not only smash their transfer record to land the central midfielder, 22, but also hand him a salary that would immediately catapult him into the club’s bracket of top earners.
Tottenham have had an opening offer for Ndombele rejected by Lyon, but they will step up their pursuit by tabling a new bid of around £50million.
A source with knowledge of Tottenham’s recruitment has told Football Insider the club will also offer Ndombele a package worth £200,000-a-week over five years.
This would not only mean a massive pay hike for the six-times France international but put him on a salary par with Spurs skipper and talisman Harry Kane, the current top earner on the playing staff.
Mauricio Pochettino has made it clear behind the scenes that he regards Ndombele as a player who can fill the gap left by the January departure of Mousa Dembele and bring a new authority to the Tottenham midfield.
Spurs know they will have to spend big to win the race for Ndombele, who is also attracting strong interest from elite European rivals led by Juventus.
Tottenham have not bought any players in the last two transfer windows and Pochettino has made no attempt to hide his desire for the club to demonstrate real ambition this summer.
The club’s current record outlay is the £42million deal for Davinson Sanchez in the summer of 2017.
