Tottenham should sell Eric Dier and Toby Alderweireld and not Davinson Sanchez, according to Danny Mills.
Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, the ex-England and Leeds United defender claimed Spurs should play with a back three to get the best out of Sanchez and full-backs Matt Doherty and Sergio Reguilon.
Football Insider revealed earlier this week Tottenham want to sell the Colombian regardless of the identity of their new manager.
He has struggled for game time in recent weeks with Dier and Alderweireld interim boss Ryan Mason’s preferred pairing.
Dier has played 37 games this season and told the London Evening Standard last month he would like his ashes scattered at the stadium.
Asked whether Spurs would be right to sell Sanchez, Mills told Football Insider correspondent Connor Whitley: “The problem that Tottenham have is Doherty has come in and not really done it but could easily revert to wing-back if they play that system. Reguilon is decent. You’ve got two good wing-backs.
“You then have to decide if you play a centre-back pair or a three. Sanchez in a three could be good with some players beside him who could bring him on.
“You have to find those players which is never easy.
“Alderweireld’s had better times. He’s not getting any younger.
“You’re looking for a replacement for him and a replacement for Dier. Do you then want to get rid of Sanchez as well? Even if he’s back up.
“You’re going to need three new centre-backs if you do that. That’s the only issue with selling Davinson Sanchez.
“Even if he’s not your first-choice he’s a decent back up to have and keep around. He’s probably a better option than Alderweireld and Eric Dier.
“It still looks like they’re going to have to bring in two decent defenders.”
