Pundit issues verdict on Tottenham re-signing Trippier as global mission underway
Tottenham are “scouring the world” for a new right-back but will not be tempted into pursuing former star Kieran Trippier.
That is the view of former European Golden Shoe winner Kevin Phillips, speaking exclusively to Football Insider about the Atletico Madrid man.
The Athletic reported last Wednesday (22 December) that a new attack-minded right-back is top of Spurs’ January shopping list.
Trippier, who notched six assists in 28 La Liga appearances last term, would fit the bill and he appears keen on a Premier League return.
This site revealed last Thursday (23 December) that talks between Trippier and Newcastle United have stalled over his £120,000-a-week wage demands.
Trippier‘s deal expires at the end of the season but Atletico have the option to extend it by a further 12 months if he starts 20 matches this term.

But Phillips does not believe Spurs will capitalise on the snag in Trippier’s talks with Newcastle to sign their former player.
“I think he’ll look somewhere else,” he told Football Insider‘s Dylan Childs when asked about the possibility of Trippier returning to Spurs.
“Will he come back and perform the way he did when he was there before? I don’t see it.
“They will probably look for a player with age on his side. Who that is, I don’t know.
“But they will be scouring the world for an attacking right-back that you can get four or five seasons out of.
“That would be better for them than going after Trippier.”
Trippier turned out 114 times for Tottenham between 2015 and 2019.
He is yet to register a goal or assist in 14 appearances for struggling Atletico this term.
