Tottenham told to sell 'calamitous' Emerson Royal and teammate after training ground bust-up - Agbonlahor

Gabriel Agbonlahor

Aston Villa legend Gabby Agbonlahor joined Football Insider's punditry team in November 2020. The Villans’ all-time leading Premier League goalscorer is loving life in the media spotlight and has no problem riling up supporters with his views - watch out Leeds fans! One of the most in-demand pundits at the moment, Gabby is also a regular on Sky Sports and talkSPORT.

Gabby Agbonlahor has insisted both Emerson Royal and Matt Doherty are "not good enough" for Tottenham and should be moved on this month.

The former Aston Villa striker, speaking exclusively to Football Insider, savaged the "technically dreadful" and "calamitous" Royal, 23, following his exile from the Spurs starting eleven.

He has fallen out of favour at the club and has played just 22 minutes since the World Cup, with Matt Doherty now ahead of him in the pecking order.

Royal has been ridiculed by fans and pundits alike for his lacklustre performances since joining to Spurs from Barcelona for £22million in 2021.

He has registered just one goal and two assists across 61 appearances for the club.

When asked if the criticism Royal gets is warranted, Agbonlahor told Football Insider’s Ewan Kingsbury: “I think so, absolutely.

“If he’s Brazillian, I’m Spanish.

“He’s technically dreadful, awful on the ball.

“I remember watching him in the Champions League when Spurs needed a goal – he gave the defender the eyes and kicked it out of play.

“That sums up someone who is missing the technical ability to play in this league. That’s why he was nowhere near the World Cup squad, and Dani Alves at 39 was picked instead.

“He’s not good enough. He’s calamitous and he needs to be shipped out.

“You can’t have such poor options if you’re going to finish in the top four. Doherty needs to go too, he’s not good enough.

“He’s good going forward, but both players get exposed defensively.”
