Alan Hutton has claimed Steven Bergwijn is a better option for Tottenham than Barcelona's Memphis Depay.

Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, the former Spurs defender said that a return to the English top flight could be a risk for Depay.

On Monday (4 July), Spanish outlet Sport reported that Tottenham have made an enquiry about the 28-year-old.

Spurs are said to have asked about the Dutchman during talks over a loan move for Clement Lenglet.

The forward only has one year left on his contract at the Nou Camp and has been told he will struggle for game time next season.

When asked who Depay could replace in Antonio Conte's side, Hutton told Football Insider: "I don’t think Depay is any better than Bergwijn personally.

"It’s just my opinion.

"I know he’s had some big moves. He went to Manchester United and it didn’t work out. He went abroad to France where it seemed to suit his style better. So coming back to Tottenham, is it a risk? Yes possibly, especially when you’ve got Bergwijn there who I think is a similar player.

"Why get rid of one to bring in somebody that’s relatively the same kind of profile?

"It will be interesting to see if they do do that because now you’re looking at the squad and they’ve got [Dejan] Kulusevski, [Lucas] Moura, [Heung-Min] Son, Richarlison, they’ve got a lot of options there so it’ll be interesting to see if they actually do want him and what he can bring to the team."
