West Ham and Premier League rivals Tottenham have been offered the services of attacker Nicolas Gaitan by Atletico Madrid, according to a report.
The Daily Mail claimed in their live transfer blog on Thursday [02:48pm] that Watford are plotting a last-gasp swoop for Gaitan, 29, who appears to have been shown the door at La Liga giants Atletico having been shown to clubs in England.
Gaitan was only signed by Diego Simeone from Benfica last summer and in his debut season in Madrid he only managed to make 11 starts in La Liga as he was reduced to earning the bulk of his game time off the bench.
In total, the 19-times Argentina international has scored four goals and supplied five assists in 37 appearances across all competitions for Atletico, but it appears that he is no longer holding down a prominent role in Simeone’s plans due to this latest report.
Tottenham and West Ham could both do with adding attack-minded wingers to their squad before the transfer window slams shut at 11pm.
Slaven Bilic’s side have had a tough start to the campaign may need the extra fire power in attack with Gaitan known for his explosive pace and ability to cut inside and threaten opponents.
Football Insider Verdict
Gaitan is a good player but it seems that the Hammers may have missed the opportunity to sign him. Bilic needs defensive players in before making and additions to his attack even though the first few games of the campaign have shown that he needs to strength all areas of his squad. Watford seem like they may be in pole position to get Gaitan’s signature anyway, which would be one major coup for Marco Silva and his men. West Ham’s transfer deadline day is beginning to look slightly disastrous and they must move quick if they want to give their fans any hope about the new season.
In other West Ham news, Trevor Sinclair has urged the Irons to sign this top-flight midfielder.
