Liverpool want to sign a top-class central midfielder this summer - and Jurgen Klopp's number one target is Declan Rice, Football Insider understands.

The Anfield boss is a huge admirer of the West Ham kingpin, 23, and believes he would be a perfect fit for his team.

But a source with knowledge of Liverpool's recruitment told Football Insider that there is little chance of Klopp being given the funds by owners Fenway Sports Group to fund a mega deal for Rice.

West Ham

West Ham wanted £100million for the England star last summer when he was being linked with the Premier League elite.

But manager David Moyes insisted at his media conference on Friday that the price tag has now rocketed and "£150m just now would be minimum".

That will not put off a string of elite clubs from making moves for Rice in the upcoming summer window.

Man United, Man City and Chelsea are all believed to have a strong interest in the midfield anchorman as they look to strengthen their squads.

Klopp also wants to bring in a top-class midfielder who can compete with Fabinho, Jordan Henderson, Thiago Alcantara, Naby Keita, Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain, Curtis Jones, James Milner and Harvey Elliott for a spot in central midfield.

Milner is out of contract at the end of the season and can leave on a free if he does not agree an extension.

Henderson turns 32 in June while Thiago turns 31 next week

Klopp believes this summer is the right time to recruit a midfielder who can dominate in the centre of the pitch for years to come.

Rice has taken his game to a new level at West Ham this season, not only protecting his side's defence but also driving his team forward from the centre of the pitch.

He is a strong contender to be named in the Premier League team of the year on the back of his hugely impressive 38 appearances in all competitions.

Rice has a contract with West Ham until the summer of 2024 and the club have the option of another year.
