Agbonlahor can't believe Newcastle United could soon finalise Brennan Johnson deal

Gabby Agbonlahor has insisted Newcastle should steer clear of a summer deal for Nottingham Forest star Brennan Johnson.

The former Aston Villa striker, speaking exclusively to Football Insider, claimed the 21-year-old would only be a "bit-part" player for the Magpies - and should continue his development at the City Ground.

According to Football Transfers (11 May), Newcastle are considering a move for Johnson in the summer window - with Arsenal, Aston Villa and Man City also keen.

The Wales international earns a reported wage of £30,000-a-week on a contract which runs until June 2026.

Johnson has contributed 10 goals and three assists across all competitions for Nottingham Forest - who secured their Premier League survival with victory over Arsenal on Saturday (20 May).

Meanwhile, Newcastle are set for a top-four finish - which would see Champions League football return to St James' Park for the first time in 21 years.

Agbonlahor told Football Insider’s Ewan Kingsbury: “I don’t think he’s good enough at the moment.

“I think if he went to Newcastle, he wouldn’t get enough minutes. They’ve got a lot of good players.

“Gordon, Almiron, and Saint-Maximin are all on the bench at the moment.

“I think they could concentrate on bringing in another striker.

“But they’ve got a good front line as it is.

“I think if I was Johnson, I would stay at Nottingham Forest and continue that Premier League journey – rather than become a bit-part player at Newcastle.”
