Alan Hutton has completed a medical at Wigan Athletic as he finalises a free transfer from Aston Villa, Football Insider can reveal.

A Wigan source has told Football Insider that Hutton has not undergone medical tests after agreeing the terms of a two-year contract.

Villa announced at the start of June that Hutton was on their released list of players and would leave when his contract expires at the end of the month.

The veteran defender is eager to extend a career that has blossomed in recent years, and he developed into a firm favourite of the Holte End after a sticky start to his time in the Midlands.

Supporters were disappointed that manager Dean Smith did not look to continue Hutton's eight-year spell, after he made 33 league starts among 34 appearances last season.

Wigan boss Paul Cook is an admirer not only of the ex-Scotland international's vast experience, accumulated by lengthy spells at three stellar clubs in Villa, Tottenham and Rangers, but also his versatility.

Hutton was used mainly at right-back but also regularly slotted into the left side of defence during his 202 appearances for the Villa, following his 2011 transfer from Spurs.

In other Aston Villa news, it can be REVEALED that the club have opened preliminary talks to sign a £17.5million player.
