Aston Villa and Wolves are ready to ambush Leeds United's bid to sign striker Pierre-Michel Lasogga by Thursday, according to a report.

Football site TeamTalk claim Lasogga has jetted into England to hold talks not only with the Yorkshire giants but also with two of their main promotion rivals.

It is said that Leeds are in pole position to land the German striker, 25, but Midlands big hitters Wolves and Villa are also firmly in the race.

German newspaper Bild have reported that Hamburg are willing to subsidise what could be a loan deal for one of their top earners, who has a salary of £59,000-a-week.

Hamburg are keen to sell off Lasogga and have given him permission to discuss a move to the Championship after leaving him out of their squad at the weekend.

The Bundesliga club announced on their official Twitter account on Monday morning that Lasogga is checking out his transfer options as he prepares to fly to England for meetings.

Lassoga has been strongly linked with Leeds for most of the last month and the departure of Chris Wood to Burnley has now seemingly opened the door fior him to move to a club where he would have hopes of being the first-choice striker.

Leeds have 19-year-old Dutchman Jay-Roy Grot and the injured Caleb Ekuban as their only orthodox options to lead the line of attack.

Former Germany Under-21 international Lasogga barely started a game for HSV last term, scoring just twice in 22 appearances across all competitions after being named in the starting line-up just six times.

He has been on the books at Hamburg for four years after he signed on an initial loan deal in 2013 before earning a five-year contract a 12 months later.

Football Insider Verdict

Leeds have been in the driving seat to sign Lasogga for a long time, but there will be alarm among fans that a player they want could instead join one of their chief promotion rivals. The German is well within his rights to hold talks with each of the trio. Hamburg have made it clear he is free to leave after granting him permission to secure a move by Thursday. If the German has been identified as the first choice to replace Wood, then Andrea Radrizzani and company must pull out all the stops to seal the deal. He is a proven goal-getter and should make a big impact in the Championship.
