Aston Villa are plotting a move to sign Celta Vigo star Oscar Mingueza in the January transfer window, sources have told Football Insider.

Speaking on the latest edition of Football Insider's Inside Track podcast, senior correspondent Pete O'Rourke revealed that Villa are using Unai Emery and Monchi's links to Spain to survey La Liga for potential reinforcements.

However, the deal for the 25-year-old is expected to be a difficult one to get over the line as Celta Vigo do not want to lose him mid-season and will price Villa out of a deal.

Sources say Emery wants to strengthen his squad to have at least two quality players in every position, but the club's financial position is set to restrict their spending.

Instead, they may be forced to take there interest elsewhere in the short-term and revisit their move to sign Mingueza in the summer.

The manager's knowledge of Spanish football, combined with Monchi's strong working relationship with a number of clubs, has drawn Villa's attention to La Liga.

Mingueza, meanwhile, has attracted interest from a number of top European clubs as a result of his consistently impressive displays so far this season.

He has also earned two senior caps for Spain, with his first competitive appearance coming in the UEFA Nations League clash with Switzerland in November.

He has made 18 appearances so far this season, picking up five assists both as a right-back, left-back, right-midfielder and left-midfielder, with his versatility key to Vigo's style.

That is also thought to be key to Villa's thinking as he is capable of providing cover across a number of positions while addressing their right-back issue.
