Aston Villa manager Steven Gerrard will deal with Morgan Sanson "in house" after his antics against Manchester United.

That is the view of Gerrard's former England teammate Paul Robinson, speaking exclusively to Football Insider about the 27-year-old's "petulant" behaviour.

Sanson reacted angrily to being replaced by Philippe Coutinho in Saturday's 2-2 draw with United even though Villa were 2-0 down at the time.

On Twitter (15 January), the French midfielder later apologised for his actions in the second half.

Robinson claimed Sanson "looked even more silly" after his replacement, Coutinho, grabbed a goal and an assist from the bench.

"No player likes to be substituted but you don't want to see petulance like that," he told Football Insider.

"Knowing Steven like I do, it will be dealt with in house.

"Regardless of who you are and how well you think you're playing, you should accept being substituted. It's the manager's decision.

"Look at how Richarlison acted a few weeks ago. It does not send out a good message.

"It is not good for the team and it is not good for morale. No matter how disappointed you feel, keep it in.

"Sanson looked even more silly given that Coutinho came on and scored the equaliser."

Sanson has made seven appearances across all competitions for the Claret and Blue this season.

He moved to Villa Park from Marseille 12 months ago.
