Birmingham City have had a bid accepted bid for Peterborough United star Marcus Maddison, Football Insider has learned.

Posh chairman Darragh MacAnthony revealed on Twitter on Monday night that his club had rejected two offers for the attacking midfielder from the Midlands outfit.

A Birmingham source has told Football Insider that the club have now agreed a fee with Peterborough and have been granted permission to hold talks with Maddison.

It raises the prospect that Charlton will be hijacked after they had already had a bid accepted for Maddison.

Birmingham now have a chance to seal a deal for the League One star and end his lengthy spell at Peterborough.

His contract contains a £2.5 million release clause and this has plunged into major doubt this month.

The League One promotion hopefuls are aware they risk the prospect of him leaving on a free transfer in the summer, when he is out of contract, if they cannot agree a deal by 31 January.

The former Newcastle United man is regarded as one of the best attacking players in the Football League and has an outstanding record of creating and scoring goals for Peterborough.

In 249 appearances for the third-tier club, Maddison has scored 62 goals and registered a remarkable 92 assists.
