Crewe Alexandra midfielder Ryan Wintle is undergoing a Cardiff City medical today, Football Insider understands.

Mick McCarthy’s side have agreed a deal to sign the highly-rated midfielder on a free transfer.

A recruitment source told Football Insider that Cardiff have offered Wintle a three-year deal to complete the transfer.

The Welsh club have beaten off interest from several other Championship sides for the 24-year-old’s signature.

Crewe were hoping to keep Wintle, but the player turned down the offer of a new deal as he wanted to test himself at a higher level.

Wintle's move to Cardiff will see him link up with former Crewe team-mate Perry Ng, who made the switch during the January transfer window.

The multi-talented Wintle is accomplished as both a defensive midfielder and centre-back and featured 48 times for Crewe in 2020-21.

He performed both roles for David Artell’s side last term as they finished 12th in League One.

Cardiff finished nine points off the play-off spots in 8th place in the Championship last season.

Bluebirds boss Mick McCarthy is determined to build a side capable of challenging for promotion next term.

Wintle is set to become Cardiff's third signing of the summer following the arrivals of James Collins and Mark McGuiness from Luton and Arsenal respectively.
