Rotherham are ready to launch a bid for Anthony Stokes as new manager Alan Stubbs targets a reunion with the Celtic striker, according to a report.

Stubbs had the 27-year-old Irishman on loan from the Hoops in his last managerial post at Hibernian.

Stokes scored 10 goals in all competitions while on loan with the Scottish Championship side for the second half of the season, including a double in the cup final triumph over Rangers.

According to the Sun, Stubbs is going back for one of his old favourites and hopes Stokes will be among his first signings in an early summer deal.

Rotherham face competition from fellow Championship side Birmingham for the signing of the striker, who joined Celtic from Hibs six years ago.

Stokes has courted controversy at Parkhead and was suspended for two weeks in December after criticising then manager Ronny Deila on Twitter.

The trouble resulted in Celtic shipping him out on loan to Hibernian, but the Republic of Ireland international has spoken about his desire to return to the club and be part of Brendan Rodgers' new look side.

Stokes' contract is due to expire at the end of June, but the Hoops have the option of a one-year extension and could exercise that clause in order to command a fee for the striker.

Rodgers is expected to significantly trim a 30-plus strong Celtic squad with as much as 12 players believed to be facing the axe.
