Celtic are reportedly interested in a January window move for on-loan Chelsea forward David Datro Fofana.

In their attempts to sign a striker on transfer deadline day in the summer, Celtic previously targeted Fofana with a loan approach.

The striker ultimately chose Charlton Athletic, and when that move broke down, he moved to Turkish side Fatih Karagumruk on loan.

Celtic hoped to bring Kyogo Furuhashi back to the club, but Birmingham City have ruled out an exit for the Japan international.

Celtic consider David Datro Fofana bid

Fofana has enjoyed a fairly promising stint in the Turkish Super Lig since completing his move from Chelsea in the summer.

The Ivory Coast international has scored seven goals across 14 appearances in all competitions, and netted a brace against Alanyaspor on Tuesday.

Sky Sports reported on Wednesday that Celtic and Derby County are among the clubs interested in Fofana, with the Scottish Premiership club exploring a potential permanent move.

Chelsea are blocked from sanctioning any other international loans by FIFA's rules, so it should also be in their interest to move Fofana on.

The 23-year-old signed for Chelsea from Norwegian side Molde in 2023, and has only made four appearances for the Blues amid several loan moves in the years since.

Vincent Kompany was a big fan of Fofana

One of Fofana's loan stints was with Burnley for the second half of the 2023-24 Premier League season, as Vincent Kompany's side attempted to survive relegation.

The striker claimed an assist on debut against Manchester City, and his brace off the bench against Fulham in his second appearance left the Clarets extremely excited.

Given just 26 minutes to make an impact, the Ivorian first capitalised on Bernd Leno's mistake to head in his first, before bundling in a stoppage-time equaliser to send Turf Moor into raptures.

Speaking after the game, Kompany told Burnley's website: "He [Fofana] was aggressive, wanted to win every duel, he's very fast and it's a good starting point for him and we're fortunate to recruit him.

"These type of players can decide to go somewhere else and have other options but he's ready to put it all on the line for us."

Ultimately, Fofana's four-goal stint at Burnley would not keep them up, and Kompany moved on to Bayern Munich at the end of the season.

The 39-year-old's words should not be discarded, however, given how well he is doing with the German champions.
