Chuba Akpom has agreed a deal with Ipswich Town after rejecting an offer from Birmingham City, sources have told Football Insider.

The Ajax striker, 29, has held talks with both Championship clubs as he plots a return to English football.

Akpom has reached an agreement with Ipswich and is set to complete a move soon.

Birmingham are said to be "gutted" to have missed out on the former Arsenal and Middlesbrough star, who has an impressive track record in England's second tier.

Ipswich hijack Birmingham's Akpom deal

Akpom had looked set to complete a loan move to Birmingham this summer, and had even flown over for a medical with the Blues.

However, once the forward reached England, Ipswich joined the race for his signature and managed to hijack the deal.

Birmingham are expected to be fighting towards the top of the Championship next season, after promotion from League One, but the Tractor Boys are bookmakers' favourites to win the division.

Akpom has put an end to the saga by opting for a move to heavily-backed Ipswich rather than a switch to St Andrews.

The two clubs face off on Friday night to open up the Championship season.

Championship clubs race for former Man United man

Meanwhile, Football Insider exclusively revealed that Brandon Williams is being eyed up by a number of teams from the Championship and abroad..

The former Manchester United full-back has caught the attention of several clubs after a successful trial at Hull City.

Williams featured in two pre-season games for the Tigers, impressing in both, with the East Yorkshire side keen to offer him a deal.

However, Hull will face competition for the 24-year-old’s signature after his trial alerted several of their Championship rivals to his availability.
