Liverpool defender Sam Hart has cut short his season-long loan to Port Vale and returned to his parent club, it was announced on Wednesday afternoon.

The left-back has been a regular for the League One outfit in the first half of the campaign after securing a late-August switch to the Staffordshire club.

But Port Vale announced on their official Twitter account that Hart's spell at the club has been "brought to an end" after Liverpool seemingly recalled the youngster.

It is an intriguing move by Liverpool, who were in the market for a senior left-back signing last summer before deciding to use midfielder James Milner as a makeshift player on the left side of the defence.

It is a move that has paid dividends as Milner has leapfrogged Alberto Moreno to be the regular left-back for the Premier League title challengers.

Hart's transfer back to Liverpool suggests there has been a change of plan from first-team manager Jurgen Klopp.

Hart, who has been with the Reds since the 2012-13 campaign, has played 14 matches this season for Port Vale, 12 of which he has started, including nine in the league.

Hart, who featured for Liverpool in a pre-season friendly against Mainz this summer, became the Valiants' 15th signing of the summer when he signed six days before the window cut-off.

The former Manchester United youth-team product, who can play at left-back or in left midfield, is contracted to Port Vale until the end of the season.

In other Liverpool team news, the club have made a striker approach and Klopp has personally called the player to smooth the deal.
