Adam Armstrong has signed a new contract with Newcastle, it was announced on Thursday night.

that the striker, 19, has penned a four-year deal to extend his ties to his boyhood club.

The 19-year-old, who scored 20 goals while on loan at Coventry City last season, was called up for England's Under-20 squad on Thursday ahead of their friendly against Brazil next month.

He then put pen to paper on a deal which will keep him at Newcastle until 2020.

Armstrong, who joined the club aged nine and made his Premier League debut as a 17-year-old against Fulham in March 2014, told the Newcastle website: "I'm over the moon. I've been working hard on the training pitch and I did well last season, so to get the reward is massive for me and I think it's the next step.

"I went on loan last season and for me to come back here and extend my contract is brilliant for me and for my family."

Armstrong could still go out on loan this season despite extending his commitment with the Championship club.

The teenager is struggling to break into the first-team at St. James' Park, with Dwight Gayle and Aleksander Mitrovic ahead of him in the pecking order.

Manager Rafa Benitez has said Newcastle are in the market for a new forward and Armstrong can leave if the Magpies sign another striker.

The Star claim that Coventry manager Tony Mowbray is in the market to re-sign Armstrong, and believes that another 14 clubs are joining him in trying to sign Newcastle's number 32.

Armstrong was named in the League One Team of the Year last term, after scoring 20 goals in 40 league and cup encounters for Mowbray's side.

In other Newcastle news, this fringe player has officially left the Toon to return home to Holland.
