Douglas Luiz is being seen as a stopgap option for Man City in the January transfer window, sources have told Football Insider.

Speaking on the latest edition of Football Insider’s Inside Track podcast, senior correspondent Pete O’Rourke revealed that Luiz isn’t seen as a “long-term answer” for Pep Guardiola’s midfield.

The 26-year-old is a target for City in the January transfer window as Guardiola is looking to replace the injured Rodri for the remainder of the season.

Well-placed sources have told Football Insider that any deal to sign the Brazil international will be a loan deal, potentially with no obligation to sign permanently afterward.

Luiz left only left the Premier League this past summer as he joined Juventus from Aston Villa for £40million in a deal done due to profit and sustainability issues that Unai Emery’s side were facing.

However, the move hasn’t worked out for the midfielder as Luiz hasn’t featured much under Thiago Mota this season.

Man City could sign Douglas Luiz despite £100million spend

It is believed that the Italian giants would be open to letting Luiz leave the club this month, but they would prefer him to be sold permanently if possible.

That could lead to other clubs being ahead of City in the pecking order to sign Luiz, who has been gaining interest from elsewhere.

City have been splashing the cash this month having spent over £100million on Vitor Reis, Omar Marmoush, and Abdukodir Khusanov so far, which is why they’re unlikely to sign another player permanently.

Luiz was previously under contract at the Etihad from 2017 until he joined Villa in 2019, but he spent that time on loan at Girona.

The midfielder never played a game for City due to permit issues that restricted him.
