Former Leeds manager Steve Evans has had a "lucrative offer" to manage a team in Qatar, according to a BBC journalist.

Sports correspondent Charlie Slater took to Twitter on Monday to reveal that Evans, who is now in charge of Mansfield, is being courted by a club in the Middle East.

Slater reported on his personal Twitter account that he had been told by a source in London that a Qatari outfit were prepared to spend big to lure Evans.

The 54-year-old refused to deny the claim, offering a response of "no comment" when it was suggested to him.

Evans steered Mansfield to within a point of the League Two play-off positions following a 3-1 weekend win at Morecambe.

He is took over the Stags in November after being sacked by Leeds last June following a mixed spell at the Championship big hitters.

Leeds finished 13th in the league last season but, following Evans' exit, have been transformed by Garry Monk, who has taken them to fourth in the table and with genuine hopes of securing a return to the Premier League.

Evans is well regarded for his managerial exploits in the lower leagues after lengthy and successful spells at Rotherham, Crawley and Boston, as well as non-league Stamford.
