Exclusive: Arsenal terminate loan deal, player back at parent club
Arsenal have terminated Zak Swanson's season-long loan at Dutch club MVV Maastricht, Football Insider can exclusively reveal.
The Premier League giants have decided to act after the right-back, 20, was barely used in the early months of this season.
An Arsenal source has told Football Insider that Swanson is already back at his parent club after an agreement was reached with MVV Maastricht.
It is likely the youngster will go out on a new loan in the January window opening in a few weeks.
Football Insider broke the news last month that Arsenal were planning to trigger the recall option in Swanson's loan and bring him back to London.
The Gunners academy product has made only three appearances for MVV Maastricht in a campaign ruined by injury and illness.
Swanson's temporary employers were thrashed 7-1 on his debut and he struggled to get in the side even when fit.
The last of his appearances came as a sub against Ajax Under-21s in October and he subsequently was omitted from the MVV Maastricht matchday squad.
Arsenal continue to have genuine faith in Swanson and, as revealed by Football Insider, are ready to hand him a new contract.
The club have indicated to the defender they will trigger the two-year option to extend his agreement until 2024.
Swanson had been expected to make a big impact in Holland after an impressive 2019-20 season for the Gunners Under-23s.
He can play in midfield, both centrally as well as out wide, but has only been used in defence during his loan.
