Celtic could be about to pull off the "exceptional" signing of Fraser Forster from Southampton.

That is the verdict of Kevin Campbell, speaking exclusively to Football Insider assistant editor Dylan Childs about the giant goalkeeper ahead of the January window.

However, the Hoops recognise it will be an uphill battle to convince Southampton to let their number two keeper leave even though he has not played a single minute of first-team action this season.

Manager Ralph Hasenhuttl wants proven back-up to first choice Alex McCarthy and will only let Forster go if there is a replacement line up.

"Forster is an exceptional goalkeeper. He could go a long way to helping them recover but in order to save their season they need to score more goals.

"He could be a really important for them in the second half of the season.

"It would be a great move because he knows the club, he has done a very good job up there previously so it could be beneficial for all parties."

Celtic had agreed a second consecutive loan deal for Forster over the summer but he was reluctant to leave Southampton with the number one shirt up for grabs.

They subsequently signed Greece international Vasilis Barkas but he has proved a major disappointment and youngster Conor Hazard started Thursday night's Europa League clash.
