Crystal Palace have had a bid rejected by Bolton Wanderers for goalkeeper Remi Matthews, Football Insider can reveal.

The Premier League club have made a formal move for the 25-year-old as they look to strengthen their keeper ranks this summer.

A Palace source has told Football Insider that the club are eager to provide competition for current senior pair Wayne Hennessey and Vicente Guaita.

Matthews has been in their sights for some time but Palace will have to make an improved offer to convince cash-strapped Bolton to sell him.

The keeper joined Bolton initially on loan from Norwich City last summer in a deal that became permanent in the January window.

He made 20 appearances for the Lancashire club, including 18 Championship starts, and was firmly established by the end of a difficult campaign that ended in relegation.

Matthews is mulling his future ahead of Bolton's return to League One after previous spells in the Football League and Scottish Premiership at the likes of Doncaster Rovers, Burton Albion, Plymouth Argyle and Hamilton Academical.

Spaniard Guaita ended last season as the Palace number one after taking over as first choice from experienced Wales international Hennessey midway through the campaign.
