Crystal Palace have opened contract talks with defender Patrick van Aanholt over a new long-term deal, Football Insider understands

The 30-year-old's current terms are set to expire in 2021 after he penned a four-and-a-half year contract when he joined the Eagles from Sunderland back in January 2017.

A source at Selhurst Park has told Football Insider that the club have opened negotiations over a new deal in a bid to tie him down in South London for the foreseeable future.

Van Aanholt, who moved to England to join Chelsea's youth system from PSV Eindhoven, has established himself as Palace's first-choice left-back during his time at the club.

He has made 111 appearances and scored 14 goals for the Eagles to date, while he also played nine times for the Dutch national side.

The fleet-footed defender played 29 times last season but saw his campaign cut short in July due to a dislocated shoulder which required surgery.

He is yet to return for Palace following the start of the new Premier League season but manager Roy Hodgson has confirmed that he is back in training.

Academy graduate Tyrick Mitchell has started both of the club's two league games at left-back so far, while Jaroslaw Jach played in the League Cup defeat to Bournemouth.

Van Aanholt has a total of 191 Premier League games under his belt to date after his spells with Chelsea, Wigan, Sunderland and Palace.

He has also played for current top-flight sides Leicester City and Newcastle United on loan during their respective spells in the Championship.
