David Weir is close to rejoining Everton after reigniting talks to join their recruitment team, sources have told Football Insider.

Brighton announced on 12 September that Weir is leaving his post of technical director after seven years at the club.

Weir came close to returning to Everton earlier this year before negotiations fell through.

Now, a deal is back on the table, and there is a growing expectation that a full agreement can be reached between the club and the transfer guru.

Everton have been restructuring their recruitment set-up since the Friedkin takeover and have abandoned the sporting director model in favour of a wide-ranging set-up.

Everton continue boardroom reshuffle amid David Weir talks

Kevin Thelwell left Everton to join Rangers at the end of last season, and the club have undergone major changes behind the scenes.

The Merseysiders announced in June that they made four new appointments with Nick Cox, James Smith, Chris Howarth and Nick Hammond all joining this year.

Everton appointed Cox as technical director, and Weir is expected to be brought in as part of the wider recruitment structure should talks result in an agreement

Football Insider exclusively revealed in February that David Moyes was the driving force behind the push to hire Weir following their previous relationship.

The 54-year-old captained Everton during Moyes’ first spell as manager and then returned in a coaching capacity with the club’s reserve and academy sides. Now, he looks set for a third spell at the club following his exit from Brighton.

Everton weighing up Jack Grealish decision after loan success

If Weir is appointed by the Toffees, one of his first tasks resolving the situation around Jack Grealish’s future.

The winger has impressed since arriving in the summer on loan, with Grealish winning the Premier League’s player of the month for August.

While the club have an option to buy for £50 million, recent reports reveal Everton may look to sign Grealish on a free transfer next summer, despite him having two years left on his deal.

Everton are already considering buying him permanently, but his high wages and transfer fee may look unaffordable amid their financial situation, as the side seek alternative solutions.
