Liverpool are setting aside "huge" funds to strengthen their squad in January as their title challenge gathers pace, sources have told Football Insider.

The Merseyside giants will provide director of football Richard Hughes and manager Arne Slot with the backing to beef up the team with players who can go straight into the starting XI.

Liverpool have had a remarkable start to the season under their new manager, winning 11 out of 12 matches in all competitions. They head the Premier League after eight games and have a 100 per cent record in the reformed Champions League table.

This comes after the Merseysiders made only two senior summer signings for relatively small sums in the wake of Jurgen Klopp's emotional departure.

Federico Chiesa joined from Juventus in a deal worth £12.5million shortly after they signed Valencia goalkeeper Giorgi Mamardashvili for £25m plus £4m in add-ons, although the Georgia international has remained with the La Liga club until next summer.

Liverpool also came close to signing a defensive midfielder but talks over a deal for Real Sociedad's Martin Zubimendi collapsed at the eleventh hour.

Now, the Merseysiders are beginning to lay the groundwork for next year and that includes January as well as the main summer window.

Sources have told Football Insider that significant cash will be available for Slot and the recruitment team to strengthen in the positions identified.

Those are likely to be defensive midfield despite Ryan Gravenberch's outstanding transformation, as well as left-sided centre-back and also a playmaker.

Liverpool have showed in previous January windows they will spend big on the right player, with current stars Virgil van Dijk, Luis Diaz and Cody Gakpo all signing in mid-season.
