Man United chiefs are "confident" they will appoint Ruben Amorim as the successor to Erik ten Hag, sources have told Football Insider.

Sporting CP boss Amorim, 39, has emerged as the leading candidate for the role after Ten Hag's sacking - with negotiations accelerating in the last 24 hours and a clear timeline now in place behind the scenes at Old Trafford.

He is the top choice for United chiefs after Football Insider revealed on 15 October that they had drawn up a new manager “contingency plan” following discussions in London.

He is keen to take the Old Trafford role despite having two years left to run on his Sporting deal.

The obstacle of a compensation package and payment terms still need to be navigated by United but there is a confidence a deal will be agreed.

Sources say it is now a matter of "when, not if" Amorim comes in as the new manager of the Red Devils, who are languishing in 14th in the Premier League table.

Ten Hag had also managed only three points from a possible nine in Europa League fixtures against FC Twente, Porto and Fenerbahce.

Ruud van Nistelrooy will take interim charge of United in their League Cup clash against Leicester City on Wednesday (30 August).

United then face Chelsea at Old Trafford on Sunday (3 November) but it is unclear if Amorim will be in place.

The highly-regarded Portuguese coach has led Sporting to 12 wins in 14 games in the 2024-25 campaign so far.
