Tranmere Rovers have agreed a deal to sign Peterborough United midfielder Alex Woodyard on loan, Football Insider understands.

The 26-year-old's future at London Road has been uncertain for some time with the League One club open to offers for him since the summer.

A source at Peterborough has told Football Insider that the club are willing to let the midfielder depart this month and that Tranmere have moved quickly to agree a deal for his capture.

The 26-year-old remained at Peterborough over the summer transfer window, despite being up for sale, and he has gone on to make 18 appearances across all competitions for the club this season.

However, Woodyard does not figure in Darren Ferguson's long-term plans moving forward at Peterborough and the Posh have entertained offers for his capture once again.

A number of League One and League Two clubs have expressed an interest in securing his signature, but Tranmere have moved quickly to agree a deal with the all-action midfielder.

Woodyard is set to become the second new signing of this month's window for the Merseyside outfit following the recent arrival of defender Peter Clarke from Fleetwood Town.

The versatile midfielder, who can play central or in a more defensive capacity, has made 69 appearances for Peterborough since joining the club from Lincoln City in the summer of 2018.

Since starting his career at Charlton Athletic, Woodyard has also played for Southend, Farnborough, Dartford, Concord Rangers and Braintree.
