Portsmouth have had three bids rejected for Sydney FC defender Hayden Matthews, sources have told Football Insider.

The Championship giants have made the centre-back, 20, one of their top targets before the close of the transfer window and have made multiple attempts to get a deal over the line.

But the Australian A-League side have turned down three Pompey offers, including the latest bid of £900,000 for the player.

With just a few days remaining before the transfer window closes, Portsmouth will need to return with an improved offer once again.

Matthews became an important member of the Sydney FC squad last season, making 18 appearances after breaking into the team.

The central defender’s is under contract with the Australian club expires in 2027, which puts them in a strong negotiating position.
