Frank McAvennie has insisted it is Steven Gerrard and not Ross Wilson who is chiefly responsible for the amazing Rangers signings in recent years.
Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, the Celtic legend insisted the the manager rather than the director of football deserved the main credit for building the team romping to this season's league title.
McAvennie highlighted how Rangers' shrewd squad building has been done through the connections of the Liverpool icon in the dugout.
He pointed out how the Light Blues' remarkable resurgence has been built upon free transfers and bargain signings.
The likes of Allan McGregor, Scott Arfield, Steven Davis, Joe Aribo, Jermain Defoe and Calvin Bassey have been lured from England with no transfer fees paid.
Glen Kamara was signed from Dundee for £50,000 while the recent window ended in a blizzard of cut-price arrivals.
Jack Simpson and Scott Wright were signed after initially agreeing pre-contracts, while Nnamdi Ofoborh has agreed to join in the summer when his Bournemouth deal expires.
McAvennie told Football Insider: "They've done well though Rangers, it's all frees and £50,000 players that Stevie Gerrard's brought in, some great work for the money they've spent.
"He's done magnificently in the transfer market, he'll get you a bargain that's for sure. It's him that's doing it rather than other people.
"Forget what else you hear. It's down to the manager."
Rangers have made some big-money signings, most notably Ryan Kent, Connor Goldson, Borna Barisic and Filip Helander.
However, the £7million capture of Kent had Gerrard's stamp on it as he coached him while he was at Liverpool.
