'I mean...Wow' - Exclusive: McAvennie reveals what he's been told about new Celtic signing

Frank McAvennie

Celtic and West Ham legend Frank McAvennie joined the Football Insider stable in June 2020 and has not disappointed with his own brand of unique punditry. He loves talking football almost as much as he loved scoring goals, and still has close links in the dressing room at Parkhead.

Frank McAvennie revealed that he has been told Celtic new-boy Diego Laxalt is "one of the top 10 left-backs in the world".

The Parkhead legend, speaking exclusively to Football Insider correspondent Dylan Childs, said that he would start the 27-year-old in this weekend's Old Firm, especially given there will be no crowd at Celtic Park.

The Uruguay international arrived on a season-long loan deal from AC Milan last week and has been training with Neil Lennon's side ahead of Saturday's game against Rangers.

Laxalt has not played a competitive match since 24th July, when he started in a 1-1 draw against Atalanta in Serie A.

In total, the left-back made 24 appearances in all competitions last season, having spent the first half or the 2019/20 campaign on loan at Torino.

When asked by Football Insider if he was confident that the Uruguayan would hit the ground running at Parkhead, McAvennie said:

"I have been told that he is one of the top 10 left-backs in the world. I mean... Wow.

"If you look at his experience, he has got to be a great player. I would not have any problem slipping him straight in for the Old Firm.

"Listen, there is also no crowd there. It will be totally different with no crowd, not that it would matter to him if he has played for AC Milan though. He clearly has a bit set of knackers."
