Harry Maguire is continuing to fight for a place in the Manchester United starting lineup despite edging closer to his contract expiring.

Former Old Trafford chief scout Mick Brown previously told Football Insider Maguire could be tempted to leave Man United if he doesn’t play more regular minutes ahead of the 2026 World Cup next summer.

The England international scored the winner in Man United’s 2-1 win over Liverpool last month, but he’s been in and out of Ruben Amorim’s side this season.

Maguire’s current deal at Old Trafford expires in June 2026, with Saudi Pro League clubs believed to be interested in securing the 32-year-old’s signature.

Harry Maguire to Saudi verdict shared

Former Man City financial adviser Stefan Borson exclusively told Football Insider Man United could agree a new contract with Maguire on reduced terms.

Maguire is open to staying at Old Trafford, but the two parties will have to work out the finer details of an extension.

Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, Borson said: “I mean, it's going to happen with all these deals. I think Maguire is a player who wants to stay at United. He'll look around at what his options are to move on.

“I think United will probably still be again outside of Saudi Arabia if that's an option for Harry Maguire. It’s probably not the obvious first move for Harry Maguire. So, assuming that's off the table, I think even on a reduced level Manchester United will be the leading bidder and he'll probably stay.

“I think he'll be happy with that and will recognise that the contract that he signed when he was an £80million fresh signing on let's say a five-plus-one contract is now no longer the level that's appropriate for a player of his age.”

Maguire, who joined Man United from Leicester City for £80m in 2019, has started in four of his eight appearances this season.

Maguire contract negotiations revealed after Man United latest

Borson revealed Maguire’s salary will depend on how long his potential new deal is for at Old Trafford.

“It becomes about whether he wants a one or a two-year deal and, obviously if it's a one year, then he can probably expect a higher salary,” said Borson.

“If it's a two-year deal, then he might want to give a bit more to get the additional duration. So, these are all the sorts of things that end up in that negotiation, but I think it makes perfect sense for United to seek to renew him.

“He's probably not a player you would think they would want to lose on a free. I think a deal will probably be done there. It feels like it makes sense for both parties, which is the basis for any of these deals.”

Maguire is looking to force his way back into contention for England after missing out on Thomas Tuchel’s recent squads.
